Space-Bit Attack is one of those game that really caught my attention while I was adding new HTC Vive-compatible games to the site.
As an aging gamer, I am really fascinated watching developers reviving some of the (very) old classic games and bringing them to Virtual Reality. Space Bit Attacks is a captivating take on the retro arcade classic, Space Invaders.
Space Invaders was released by Tomohiro Nishikado in 1978 and reached various platforms, including the Atari 2600 video game console in 1980. This was one of the most addictive games I played at that time, and oh boy it was a long time ago. I will always have a warm place in my heart for these retro games and of course, I was thrilled to hear about Space Bit Attack when I first read about it.
Like its classic, you pilot a spaceship and need to take down a swarm of aliens and stop their invasion. Like the original title, you'll be shooting the enemy one at a time and you'll be unlocking new features and abilities as you progress, so you'll be able to confront more powerful enemies.
The game is playable in both VR and non-VR, but the developer has mentioned on its Steam page that he strongly recommends buying this game only if you have or plan to get a VR headset. It's understandable because you only get that full immersive experience that the developer was after, only if you play it on VR, rather than on a regular monitor.
Space Bit Attack (Bit, because it was first released in 8-bit graphics) is compatible with HTC Vive and Oculus Rift headsets and supports their compatible Tracked motion controllers. You can play it also with either a gamepad or keyboard/mouse, both seated or standing positions.
The game features really beautiful vivid visuals with nice particle effects and epic sound effects that will revive those great arcade-days memories back. The enemies models are designed like the old 8-bit ones, but of course, they carry a three-dimensional shape rather than a 2D one.
The game was released on April 5th, 2016 on Steam. If you haven't gotten a chance to play this arcade game before, I highly recommend giving it a try, it's has a very addictive gameplay. I hope to see more of these retro-classic games coming back in a new fresh VR form. I can only thank the developer, Lucid Sight, for bringing this one to us, looking forward to seeing what you come with up next!
